Obituary Rune Waagbø

IN MEMORIAM OF

RUNE WAAGBØ

Deeply shocked we received the message of the loss of our colleague Rune Waagbø. He fell ill at the end of last year and his life could not be saved. He was 63 years old. Rune lived in Bergen, Norway, and worked as program manager for fish nutrition at NIFES, and from 2021 for the programme Future Aquaculture after the merger between NIFES and Institute of Marine Research in 2018. We will all remember and miss his warm smile and good laugh, and his generosity and skills as a scientist.

Rune started at NIFES as a Master’s student in fish nutrition in 1984. He was fully trained as a bioengineer and contributed a lot of knowledge from human diagnostics to the work with nutrition and fish health, which has since been his field of work. After completing his doctorate in 1993, Rune has managed to be both a highly published researcher and leader in several roles both at NIFES and at IMR (HI).

Rune was a researcher with an international reputation and has been central to the development of the research journal Aquaculture Nutrition, where he has been editor for a number of years. He became member of EAFP in 1998. Rune was a scientific heavyweight, and he will be sorely missed by colleagues and friends. Our thoughts go to Rune’s family.
