16th – Graz 2016
16th Joint meeting of the German, Austrian and Swiss branches of the EAFP
“Aquaculture – a challenge for fish farmers and veterinarians”
4th to 7th October 2016, Hotel Weitzer, Graz, Austria
The Austrian Branch welcomed a total of 97 participants arriving from Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, to join this meeting in Graz. A lot of-of them contributed to a very interesting scientific program, consisting of 40 oral and 21 poster presentations within a wide range of topics in fish pathology. The key aspects were diseases of freshwater fish and crayfish in aquaculture, diseases of ornamental fish, diagnosis, and therapy, needs of aquaculture, aquatic environment, and animal welfare. The “Wilhelm-Schäperclaus-Förderpreis” was granted to 2 young scientists for the best oral and the best poster presentation, respectively.
The social program of the meeting was also well attended. On Tuesday evening we had our come together, on Wednesday a guided tour of the baroque old town of Graz and on Thursday the social evening event, starting with live Styrian folk music, followed by the banquette and ending up with the handover of the two grants. Most participants left on Friday afternoon. On Saturday a small group of 20 joined the excursion, visiting the Lipizzaner Stud in Piber, where the famous horses of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna get bred and 2 Styrian carp farms.
The meeting was a great success for all of us and we are looking forward to the 17th meeting in 2018 that might be hosted in Switzerland.
Many thanks to all institutions that supported our meeting either with personal or financial contributions.
