Applications are open for EAFP 2026 Small Grant Scheme

The EAFP launches a new Small Grant Scheme (SGS) to support students and early career researchers in their career development.

The aim is to promote mobility and foster new collaborations. Students and young researchers in fish and shellfish pathology and related research areas will be supported in conceptual and methodological training outside their home institution, and grant access to facilities and equipment at other research centres.

Five grants are available for 2026. The maximum amount that can be allocated to an applicant will be up to 5000 Euro.

Criteria:

  1. MSc and PhD students and early career researchers whose doctorate was awarded no more than four years ago are eligible to apply.
  2. The applicant must be a member of the EAFP who must have paid membership fees for 2025 and 2026.
  3. Research stays should be planned for 2027, commencing no earlier than the 1st of January 2027.
  4. Crucial criterion is the expected significance of the requested activity for the applicant’s professional development.
  5. Preference will further be given to applicants that have not previously been awarded an SGS from the EAFP.

Protocol:

The complete submission must include the following documents:

  1. the completed application form with a detailed description of the research plan and training to be performed (max. 2 pages),
  2. a 1-page CV, together with a document as proof for criterion 1
  3. a recommendation letter from the supervisor
  4. a signed invitation letter written by the contact person at the host institution that should contain a statement that additional costs associated with the visit, such as consumables, will be covered by the host institution or other sources.

All documents should be combined into a single .pdf file and sent by email to vice-president@eafp.org. The deadline for submission is October 31st 2026.

Applications will be assessed by the EAFP Council Board. Applicants selected for funding will be required to sign the Agreement form and will be provided with 70% of the funds requested, prior to travel. Within 30 days of completion of the stay, the beneficiary is required to submit a report on expenditure incurred and a scientific report (2 pages), which should follow the structure of the research plan submitted. The document should further contain a short abstract of no more than 500 words and a picture of the beneficiary and/or the work performed, for publication on the EAFP webpage. In addition, a financial report must be submitted, summarising the eligible expenses in euros supported by attaching all invoices and receipts. Payment of the remainder of the funds is dependent on the timely delivery and the acceptance of these reports.
