With the globalization of transport of live fish, eel diseases occur at a global level in wild and cultured eel populations. Various parasites, bacteria and viruses are known to cause disease in eel. Wild eel stocks have decreased to a minimum. Apart from exploitation through fisheries, predation by birds, and pollution, disease is thought to play a role in the decline. Since aquaculture of eel is still dependent on wild eel as stock fish, this affects the eel culture directly. In eel culture, additionally, warm water diseases are causing problems, including zoonotic bacterial infections which may harm man.
