Student workshops at EAFP in Finland, September 2013

At the EAFP meeting in Finland in September 2013, we are delighted to introduce our programme of workshops for students and junior scientists, with inaugural sessions on effective scientific writing, and professional networking.

Workshop 1: Effective and Enjoyable Scientific Writing

This workshop will focus on writing an effective scientific paper, and making this a pleasurable experience! After review of the contents of the main parts of a paper, the students will learn key strategies for writing from the reader’s perspective (the key to great writing), will plan a bulleted outline, and do practical exercises in constructive effective titles, and writing compelling introductions and discussions. The workshop is targeted at individuals just beginning to write scientific papers, such as Ph.D. students and post-doctoral fellows. Workshop duration is 3 hours.

Workshop instructor

Both workshops will be taught by Dr. Sarah Poynton, long time EAFP member, fish parasitologist, award winning teacher, and freelance scientific editor. Sarah has taught numerous student workshops in many different areas of professional development, and has a particular interest in working with international students and junior scientists.

Registration

Advance registration is required for each workshop, and there is a maximum attendance of 20 participants for each workshop. Maintaining a small class size allows for personal instruction, and intense interactivity, thus helping to ensure effective use of time! Workbooks will be provided, and electronic versions of the teaching material will be made available to all participants.

There is no charge for the workshops.
